Sweat glands are located in a layer of skin called the dermis. There are two types of sweat glands – eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine glands are spread out all over the body while apocrine are concentrated around the armpits, anal, and genital areas. These two types of glands produce sweat of different compositions.
ECCRINE SWEAT GLANDS
These glands begin producing sweat from birth and create a sweat that is free of fatty acids and proteins.

The apocrine glands become active during puberty and secrete sweat that contains fatty acids and proteins.
INTERSTITIAL FLUID
The amount of sweat we create is affected by our levels of activity and our emotional state. The water that is used to generate sweat is drawn from the fluid that exists between cells – in the interstitial spaces.
This interstitial fluid is sourced from the blood supply through capillaries in our blood vessels. As we sweat, droplets form on the skin and have a cooling effect as they evaporate.
