WHAT IS A SAUNA TENT?
A sauna tent is a small one-person sauna that resembles the shape of a small tent. It is an excellent option for enjoying sauna at home or on the road. They are affordable, very easy to set up, and even easier to use. When you’re finished, you can fold it up and pack away. They use an infrared light heat source to gently heat the body directly.
The best sauna tents are a super cost-effective way to enjoy sauna heat therapy from home. Infrared sauna is a great way to relax, unwind, and relieve stress. And, a tent sauna can be used to boost health and treat a wide range of conditions.
HOW ARE THEY MADE?
Sauna tents are constructed from either cotton canvas or radiant insulation panels. These panels provide the structure to the tent and act as an insulative layer – keeping the heat inside.
The best sauna tents retain up to 95% of infrared heat within the tent. Many tents employ a double-layer panel for improved insulation. Sauna tents can reach an operating heat level of 120° F in just minutes. This means you won’t have to wait long for the sauna to heat up.
HEALING INFRARED LIGHT ENERGY
The healing infrared light energy is generated by IR panels situated on the inside of the tent. There are two types of IR panel – ceramic and carbon fiber – and they are electrically powered.
The light energy they create is absorbed by the body and contained within the sauna tent itself. Infrared light should not be confused with UV light, which can damage the skin. Infrared light is the heat source used in hospitals to keep newborn babies warm.

ADVANTAGES OF A SAUNA TENT
An infrared sauna tent holds many advantages compared to other types of home sauna. The most obvious are size, portability, and cost. They are much cheaper to buy, easy to store, and can be taken on the road.
Most devices can be neatly stored under a bed or placed comfortably in the trunk of a car. Compact size, portability, and cost price are major attractions of tent saunas.
There are several additional advantages a sauna tent holds over a traditional fixed cabin-style sauna – see below:
PORTABILITY
These saunas are mobile. They are not fixed in one location. You can move them about the house or even take them on the road with you. When you’re done you can fold them away and keep them out of sight until your next heat therapy session.
COMPACT SIZE
Tent saunas are really small. Most models are designed for use by one person. They take up very little place. This compares favorably for people that don’t have the space to construct a permanent large sauna area.
EASY STORAGE
When your home sauna tent is not in use, you can just fold it up and pack it away. It can be easily stored in a cupboard or underneath abed. This is a great feature for people living in small homes or apartments.
PRICE
A home sauna tent is a hell of a lot cheaper than a traditional sauna. While a sauna cabin is going to set you back some serious cash, even the best sauna tent is a much more affordable option – even for the premium models.
LOW RUNNING COST
The best infrared sauna tents are easy to run. Because they are so much smaller than a traditional cabin-style sauna they require much less power to achieve the same levels of heat. A sauna tent is going to save you money when it comes to your electrical bill.
ROUND THE CLOCK ACCESS
Once you have bought a sauna tent – you have access to sauna heat therapy 24 hours per day. You can whip it out any time you feel the urge to get a sweat on. Your home sauna tent will be within reach morning, noon, and night.
For more information on the advantages and disadvantages see – Pros & Cons of a Sauna Tent.
HOW DO THEY WORK?
A home sauna tent uses infrared light energy to gently heat the body. All you need to do is climb inside and take a seat. The most common type of tent sees the head and neck sit outside the tent using a port on the surface.
Side ports are also available so that you can reach outside and grab a drink of water without having to climb back out of the tent. An infrared sauna heats the body directly – without heating the air inside the sauna.
This means a tent sauna runs at lower temperatures than traditional Finnish or Swedish saunas while still achieving all the same health benefits. The internal IR panels generate infrared light which is absorbed into the body.
This heats the body from the inside. Once the body temperature begins to rise, so too does the heart rate and an intense sweat is triggered.

HOW TO USE A SAUNA TENT
1: SET-UP
Setting up an infrared sauna tent is easy and takes just 5-10 minutes. It’s just like setting up a mini tent in your home.
They can be set up in any room that has an electrical socket. Each model will vary so you’ll have to follow the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.
Most come with a frame consisting of rods and poles that are fastened together to provide the structural shape. Once the frame is in place securely mount the tent on top.
Make sure the infrared heating panels are on the inside. They’re not going to be much benefit if they’re on the outside.
A zipped door provides access to and from the tent and a small chair is placed inside for sitting.
2: PRE-HEAT
Once your sauna tent is set up, switch it on and select your desired operating temperature. Then allow time for the tent to warm up. This should take no longer than 10-15 minutes for the best infrared sauna tents.
Infrared saunas are usually run somewhere between 110-130° F. Beginners should start low and slowly work their way up over time.
3: PREPARATION
While the sauna is preheating you will have some time to prepare yourself for the session. You can use this time to change into some sweat clothes, remove all jewelry, and grab a drink of water to keep you hydrated during the session.
Make sure you have your stool situated inside the tent – and get your favorite playlist or podcast ready if audio stimulation is your thing.
4: ENJOY THE HEAT
When you’re all set, just climb inside and take a seat. Close the door port and secure the head port as you see fit. Then sit back and relax and let the infrared light energy work its magic.
The IR energy will get to work right away – penetrating the skin and gently heating the body from the inside. You will soon notice sweat droplets forming on your skin and your pulse speeding up.
Enjoy the session and allow the heat to soothe your body and mind.
5: COOL-DOWN
Once you have completed your sauna heat session you should allow time for your body to cool down. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
A cool shower can be a really invigorating part of this process. You must allow your core body temperature to return to its natural state.
6: CLEAN AFTER USE
The best way to clean your sauna tent is to give it a quick wipe down before packing away. Using a clean cloth or towel wipe the tent panels with an antibacterial spray.
Make sure it’s completely dry before packing away. The best way to do this is to let it air dry – that way you can be sure it will be fresh and good as new for your next heat session.

SAUNA TENT SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
If you have any concerns about the safety of infrared sauna, have an underlying health condition, or are currently pregnant you should seek professional medical advice to determine if infrared sauna therapy is suitable for you personally.
Only a qualified doctor can make this call – so if you have any concerns at all you should consult a professional. For further info on sauna safety – click here.
Assuming there are no medical complications there are several simple practical steps you should take to make sure your heat session runs smoothly
TEMPERATURE
You will need to preheat the infrared sauna tent before you begin your session. An infrared sauna tent should be set somewhere between 110-130°F.
If you are a beginner you should aim for the lower end of this scale. Then as you get accustomed to the heat you can crank it up. Experienced sauna users will be better suited to the 130°F temperature set point.
REMOVE JEWELRY
Make sure you remove all jewelry before getting into your home sauna tent. The metallic elements of jewelry can get very hot when inside the sauna.
So, it’s best to remove them all before you begin your session.
SESSION LENGTH
The length of a session will depend on what feels comfortable for each user. Beginners should start with short session lengths of about 10-15 minutes.
More experienced users may feel comfortable with sessions of 30 minutes, or even longer. If you are new to infrared sauna – start low and gradually work your way up.
This will allow your body to become used to the gentle heating effects of IR sauna.
STAY HYDRATED
Make sure you are properly hydrated before you begin your session. Also, make sure you stay hydrated during and after the heat therapy.
The best sauna tents will trigger a profuse sweating process which will result in significant water loss.
All these fluids need to be replaced. So, make sure you sip water or other suitable rehydrating drink during and after the session.
ALLOW TIME TO COOL DOWN
When you complete your session you need to allow time for your body core temperature to fall back down to its natural level. Avoid any strenuous activity during this period.
It will take approximately 15 minutes for your body core temperature to fully adjust. Once this has happened, and the sweating has stopped you can take a shower and get changed.
HOW OFTEN IS SAFE?
You can sauna as often as you feel comfortable. Experienced users may feel a sauna session every couple of days works best for them. If you are a beginner you should start with less frequent sessions and slowly work your way up. This way you will allow time for the body to slowly adjust to sauna heat therapy.
CHECK SAFETY CERTIFICATION
A couple of things to look out for when buying a sauna tent are – the RoHS certification and Fire Safety Rating. The RoHS, (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), is a European safety standard.
This will give you peace of mind that no hazardous substances have been used in the construction of the tent.
Then check the Fire Safety Rating – make sure the tent has been assessed and certified as safe to use.
